Tor Archer:

Tor Archer began training in sculpture in his early teens, roughing out pieces of wood for his mother to carve. In college, he began to explore carving on his own, which led to a degree in art from the University of California at Santa Cruz followed by additional study at the School For the Arts at Boston University. Archer continues to sculpt, and his work over the last few years has revolved around a series of simplified figurative sculptures based on the standing female form. He begins with stock copper pipe which he distresses with hammer and anvil and then heats, bends and weaves into a figurative shape. Using this approach, he recently completed a monumental commissioned sphere in the city of Walnut Creek. This is also the approach he will use for his heart, encasing it in a woven, protective, yet open, tangled web.

Tor Archer is represented by Scott White Contemporary Art, San Diego, CA and Telluride, CO.

Comments spoken on behalf of Tor Archer by Jennifer Brokaw, M.D.

Dr. Brokaw is currently a Professor of Internal Medicine at UCSF. She received her training at SFGH from 1988-1991.

My heart, entitled 'Entangled Heart', is a representation of the web of love that entangles all of our hearts. It is meant to be a contemplative piece as one's eye traces the lines surrounding the heart.

What more perfect project than hearts by artists as a fundraiser for the San Francisco General Hospital? What artist does not know other artists who have been patched up at The General and are now back at work making art thanks to the big hearts of the people who work there?
