Artist statement:

As it is with a lot of life in a city such as ours -- my heart is two-sided : candy coated on one side and an atelier scene on the other side. The plight of the homeless is never far from any of our lives and I thought of them when I was given the opportunity to participate in the program Hearts in San Francisco.

The solitary artist in the atelier scene represents the alienation offered up by much our society, while on the other side appearances are kept up, glossed over, or 'candy-coated' for the sake of well being or propriety. This duality affects us all to some extent but particularly the homeless.

It is to the homeless therefore, that I dedicate this heart. My week spent working on the piece seems trivial compared to their plight, yet in some ways I feel as though I've done something constructive both for the city and for myself as an artist. Being selected to participate was truly an honor and my hope is that in some way the project and the sculpture makes a difference in someone's life.

Signed,
Michael Brennan
