Giving Life to the Community

Artists

Emily and David Broom:

For the past 35 years, we've lived and worked together in Geneva, Paris, and San Francisco. In the mid-70s, after a number of years in Europe working in advertising, our entrepreneurial instincts led us to San Francisco. Here we established separate design agencies, merging them in 1980 to create Broom & Broom - a firm specializing in conceptual message-driven design. Together, we built an internationally recognized studio. Our work has garnered the top design awards. It has been shown in galleries in the United States and Europe and featured in such publications as American Institute of Graphic Arts, Communication Arts, and Graphis.

Having loved public art during our years in Europe, where it is significantly more prevalent and supported, we've appreciated the opportunity to contribute to public art projects in San Francisco, such as designing the new Union Square graphic identity. David's latest photography series, "Sausalito," grew out of his desire to find a way to define the neighborhood where we live.

For the Hearts Project, we wanted to design a heart that reflects a sense of community in an interactive way - rather than limiting the design to a personal statement. We came up with "Giant Heart" - signed by the members of the San Francisco Giants baseball team, which pumps so much excitement and hope into the heart of our city. Emily was born in California. David is British. We reside in Sausalito, California.
