Giving Life to the Community

Artists

Jami Jennings:

My passion for expression in art has always accompanied me through a long and varied self-designed arts education and a diverse working life. The story and images inside did not always find their way out easily and I have explored many mediums over the years.

Recently I have grown to love the tactile, sensual experience of working with thick oil paint, wax and stick mediums. The unpredictable revelations of color and gesture from developing the scraped-back textures allows the images within to come to life on their own, surprising me.

In my work, I'm trying to convey the soul and mood of a situation in time and place. I try to capture the subject uncontrived, people lost in thought or as they would be seen entering a room. Some of the paintings are part of a larger story in my mind.

Although I am not an innocent or visionary artist, I value the urgency and emotion of unplanned gesture driven by a subconscious response to a subject. Most of my paintings are unplanned, from impressions of and responses to people, objects and situations or places I have seen in the past or imagined in dreams.
