Giving Life to the Community

Artists

Peter Mangan:

The creation of artwork is a constantly evolving activity. I strive to make pieces that are unique and true to my personal aesthetic. Hopefully, these pieces will strike a chord in other individuals and allow them to respond.

My projects need a bit of freedom to develop as they are worked on. Once an idea occurs, I'll do sketches to help bring the piece into focus. Some areas are left open so that spontaneity and random developments can happen. This loosens things up and adds an element of unpredictability. Collage and assemblage are processes I use to create my work. The metals, paint, and enamels are enclosed in layers of fused glass like insects trapped in amber. Glass has the contrasting properties of being extremely resistant to deterioration while being vulnerable to violent action. This combines well with metals which are strong yet malleable. Metals often provide the structural elements which support the glass in my pieces.

Working with a variety of materials has allowed me to create objects of self expression. This path has meandered into and out of areas such as: color, natural materials, representation, abstraction, functionality, symbols and aesthetic beauty. I have tried to find and develop an original voice. This is an ongoing process that invigorates and sustains my life. As my experiences broaden with age, travel, and continued learning, I look forward to seeing what new artistic developments will occur.

I'm gratified to have been able to make my living in this field of endeavor. Along with creating art, the public and private exhibition and placement of work is an important component of what I do. This completes the artist to audience communication.
