Sung-Hee Min:
Sung-Hee Min came to the United States from Seoul, Korea in 1995. Profoundly inspired by her natural surroundings upon arrival, Min began to study art and sculpture in particular. During a welding class, she first considered how she might translate the organic forms of nature into their simplest geometric shapes.
The sculptures of Sung-Hee Min gracefully translate the artist's feelings for nature into form. Min is inspired by the notion of sculpting the ephemeral. She figuratively changes metal into water in her welded steel and bronze constructions. Min captures the sparkle of sunlight on water, the soft light reflected in a lake bottom, the arc and sheen of a waterfall. Although she uses cast bronze in some of her pieces, she has a preference for steel as a raw material with its modern, industrial, yet sensuous qualities. For Min, "the essence of feeling is paramount to details of shape and form." Her work has been represented locally by Hang Art Gallery in San Francisco and has been selected for group shows throughout California as well as abroad.
Sung-Hee Min has a studio in the Bay View district of San Francisco, where she works full-time. She has a BA in Spanish Language and Literature from Han-Gook University of Foreign Studies, Seoul, Korea and a BFA from the Academy of Art University, San Francisco, California. Sung-Hee Min is presently manager of the Bay Area Korean Artists Association where she coordinates member activities and collaborative group exhibitions. In addition, she has been a guest lecturer for the Metal Arts program at San Francisco State University and a metal workshop instructor at the Academy of Art University.
