Michael Knud Ross
I paint narrative scenes and landscapes set in oceans, rivers, forests, and mountains. I am interested in dynamic balance; in moments of decision and indecision; in motion and in emotion. My paintings are about connecting -- and not connecting -- to other people and to nature, and to being adrift in unknown waters and finding the way home.
I grew up in Norway and Finland and moved to Maryland with my family at age eleven; in 2000 I graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in anthropology. In 2004 and 2005 I created twelve historically-themed public sculptures for disused emergency call-boxes on the streets of Washington, DC, which are still on view. In 2005 I spent a six-month residency with the well-known painter Odd Nerdrum at his studios in Iceland and Norway. I have exhibited on the East and West Coasts, and recently curated and participated in Northern Light/Nordic Visions, an exhibition in Washington, DC of contemporary Scandinavian realism. Upcoming exhibitions include a solo show next February at Geras-Tousignant Gallery in San Francisco. I currently live and work in San Francisco.
