John Marvuglio
A San Francisco Bay Area artist, John Marvuglio is primarily a painter. His work draws largely from self-portrait whether it is the literal outer representations and interpretations or drawn from a more internal source. He utilizes painting on his continuing search and exploration of our commonality. His approach to painting is in a multi-level glazing process which provides a rich saturation of color combined with an intensity of lights and darks while not neglecting the internal workings of inner lights and darks. He has been strongly influenced by the work of the Surrealists and continues in the same vein by creating work which can be perceived as out of the ordinary and, at times, with an element of comic relief.
His studio is located in San Francisco at the Hunter's Point Shipyard. He attended the San Francisco Art Institute from 1995 through 1997 and received his Masters of Fine Arts from John F. Kennedy University in 2000. He has exhibited his work locally, in Boston and New York and has participated in annual San Francisco Open Studios. He has been commissioned for private works and has recently completed the artwork for a soon to be released jazz CD cover. Prior to returning to school to pursue a career in the arts, he worked within the non-profit sector providing management and consulting services to agencies whose missions were to improve the lives of people with developmental disabilities.
