Heroes & Hearts

Artists

San Francisco General Hospital Foundation is pleased to announce a call for entries for its 2009 Hearts in San Francisco public art and fundraising project.

Hearts in San Francisco debuted in 2004 as a city-wide public art installation that featured 130 5-foot tall heart sculptures by established and emerging artists. These unique works of art were displayed on sidewalks, plazas, parks and street corners throughout the Bay Area from February – September 2004. At the conclusion of the event, a select number of hearts were sold at auction to benefit the Foundation.

Today, the project is part of the annual Heroes & Hearts Luncheon, an event benefiting the Foundation that celebrates artistic expression and honors local heroes who help give San Francisco its heart. Each year, a new crop of artists create both large (5’ tall x 5’9” wide x 3’3” deep) and table top-sized (14” tall x 17” wide x 8” deep) hearts that are sold or auctioned off during the luncheon, which takes place in Union Square . The large hearts remain on display in Union Square and other locations throughout the summer before being delivered to their owners. Proceeds from the auction benefit SFGHF and its efforts to fund projects that enhance patient care and comfort at San Francisco General Hospital & Trauma Center . To date, nearly $3 million has been raised by the project.

This year, in addition to the large and table top-sized fiberglass hearts, the Foundation will also offer large interlocking steel hearts (5’ tall x 5’9” wide x ¼” thick).

Anyone interested in applying to be one of the 2009 artists must complete an application and submit a full-color design rendering (8.5”x11” or larger) on or before Monday, August 18, 2008. Artists should live and/or work in the Bay Area, and must provide their own workspace that can fit a large heart and be able to meet the completion deadline of Monday, November 3, 2008.

A committee comprised of SFGH Foundation staff, SFGH Foundation Board Members and Community Members will select the artists, who will be notified no later than September 30, 2008.
