History of the Hospital:

From the Gold Rush to the 1906 earthquake to the AIDS epidemic, San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center has provided exemplary care to the people of San Francisco even under the most difficult circumstances. Recognized as one of the nation's leading public hospital, its medical staff is as famous for their compassion as for their medical technique and research. As the City's only public hospital, SFGH opens its doors to anyone in need - regardless of ability to pay.

SFGH is one of the nation's first Trauma Centers, and all serious injuries in San Francisco and northern San Mateo counties are directed to the Hospital. The Hospital has the City's only 24-hour psychiatric emergency room, and is the designated site to receive and treat all victims of rape or child abuse for the City. SFGH staff leads the City's emergency medical planning for natural and man-made disasters, as well as for acts of terrorism. It is the only hospital that serves EVERYONE in our city.

Patient Population:

The patient population at SFGH is very diverse: 30% Hispanic, 25% White, 22% African American, 21% Asian/Pacific Islander, and 2% "Other/unknown." Ninety percent of patients are low-income or indigent; 33% are uninsured; only 5% have private insurance; 37% have Medi-Cal and 16% have Medicare.
