Heroes & Hearts

Joseph Giacomini & Charles Faciani

Our next two heroes today demonstrate the strength and power of working as a team and their determination to aid those in need.

In the early hours of November 1, 2003, a car broke through a fence and plunged into Lake Merced. Firefighter-EMT Joseph Giacomini and Firefighter-Paramedic Charles Faciani responded immediately to the call. As witnesses pointed them in the direction of where the car had sped off the road, they were informed that a woman was still trapped inside. In total darkness, Joseph and Charles made their way to the water line to find that the car was partially submerged, its wheels facing up.

Without delay, Joseph and Charles waded into the cold water to rescue the drowning woman. Both Joseph and Charles took turns sweeping the interior of the car but felt nothing. On their last attempt, Joseph felt what he thought was a person's arm. There was no movement. With Charles holding him securely, Joseph took a deep breath and re-entered the car. After only a few moments he felt someone floating toward him and immediately pulled the drowning woman from the car.

Joseph and Charles showed compassion in the face of peril. They are remarkable for their courage and risked their own lives to rescue and care for the innocent life of a perfect stranger.

Please join me in honoring Firefighter-Paramedic Charles Faciani and Firefighter- EMT Joseph Giacomini.
