Hearts And Artists

JOSIE GRANT, MFA

heart

I am currently the Chair of the Street Artist's Advisory Board for the S. F. Art Commission. I received both BFA & MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute, where I was an honors student since 1966, after graduation from Lowell H.S.

I worked as a CETA Grant Recipient for the art commission as a public muralist and I recently Co-Curated SOMArts Exhibit honoring the SF Art Festival Anniversary.

I have created over a dozen memorable murals in San Francisco - such as Keystone Korner - Jazz Night Klub, For Help, Page/Laguna Mini Park, The D.A's Office and 3 Locations at the Ping Yuen Housing Projects in Chinatown-, covering 7 walls some which remain today. I was acknowledged in Thomas Albright's Iconic 'Artists of the SF Bay Area', and in several books on California Murals.

I created my own mural & decorative painting 'Up Against the Wall - Murals', and have been a working artist for 40 years. I teach painting & drawing to adults & children, worked as a printmaker, illustrated poetry & children's literature - such as Poet Laureate Diane di Prima's 'Loba' series. My 'Visionary Painting' has been distributed internationally as posters & cards. My work was included in the 'World Trienale' In India & Asia under the auspices of The Smithsonian & US Communication Agency as America's entry of "Northern California Visionary Artists", which also was recently at the Grace Hudson Museum in Ukiah.

I was raised in Palo Alto, moving to SF in 1966. My father was syndicated political Cartoonist Lou Grant, and I began my formal art studies at 13 under renowned illustrator Howard Brodie before beginning art college at 15.

I continue to exhibit as a member of the San Francisco Women's Art Gallery and the Marin Society of Artists, where I am an Advisory Board Member, Pacific Art League of Palo Alto, & Mendocino Art Center.
