Caring for Lives the Community

Welcome

Welcome to the San Francisco General Hospital Foundation website. The Foundation supports the work of San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center (SFGH) through fundraising and is a critical partner in securing the future of SFGH.

San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center is part of the health care delivery system for the San Francisco Department of Public Health. SFGH provides health care services to all San Franciscans but in particular to many of the city's most vulnerable residents. On behalf of SFGH's health care professionals, staff, and volunteers I want to thank you for visiting the Foundation's website. I hope you find what you are seeking and come back often to this site.

San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center has been at the same location in the Mission district since 1872. SFGH is committed to a multi-dimensional mission that includes access to high quality health care to all residents in a culturally sensitive environment regardless of ability to pay; superb emergency and trauma care; public health vigilance, education of the next generation of health care professionals; and research to advance the care of our patients. All physicians are on the faculty of the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine and have teaching and research responsibilities. In addition, approximately 200 clinical nursing students from the California State University System, community colleges, and private universities and colleges are on placement at SFGH.

San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center is home to the only Trauma Center (Level 1) in San Francisco, it also houses the largest acute and rehabilitation hospital for psychiatric patients as well as providing the only psychiatric emergency service in the city. SFGH is also the referral center for the Department of Public Health and its affiliated partners. SFGH is - and has been - the home to many clinical programs that are considered to be model programs for the nation (e.g. AIDS, TB, Family and Community Medicine, Surgery, Trauma, and Behavioral Health).

In fiscal year 2004-2005 over 89,000 patient visits were made to SFGH outpatient clinics, and over 13,000 patients received inpatient acute services. We receive 28% of all ambulance traffic in San Francisco resulting in 3,029 adults and children being treated for injuries requiring trauma activation.

We are proud of our achievements and the quality of care provided at San Francisco General Hospital Medical Center. We serve people who need us, from those suffering from serious injury to those needing preventive health care service - from the affluent to the uninsured. We are proud of the care we provide, and we hope you are too.

Thank you for your interest,
